Since our inception in 2003, Leadership Kaua'i - a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational institution - has been dedicated to cultivating strong and committed leaders on Kaua'i, cognizant of Kaua'i's energy, agricultural, food, water, waste treatment, and sustainability challenges, and empowered to guide and serve our community collaboratively. Participants are drawn from a diverse set of adults and youth from all parts of our island with different social and economic backgrounds.

Our annual adult program joins a cross-section of 20 Kaua'i adults, ages 18 and over, to further develop their leadership skills. During their time together, participant teams learn and work to resolve important community issues. Upon graduation, participants are challenged to use the skills and knowledge they gain towards the long-term benefit of the community in their daily jobs and activities as well as through volunteerism in the Leadership Kaua'i Alumni Network (LKAN).

Pi'ina Hoku Youth Program
Our annual Pi`ina Hoku (Rising Stars) program has graduated 114 students since its first youth class in 2007. Beginning in 2012, Leadership Kaua`i will no longer be offering a stand-alone class to serve only 15-20 youth. In its place, we are launching a multi-year project with a goal to expand our youth leadership programs to all high schools island-wide, ultimately reaching thousands of youth. This project builds upon early success already achieved in partnership with Kupu A`e and Kapa`a High School during the 2011-12 school year.
Community Service and Community Leaders
We estimate that through our programs and projects, we have already touched the lives of at least 35% of Kaua'is population in a positive way. As of June, 2012, our annual classes have completed 34 total community service projects.
Leadership Kaua'i has graduated 155 adult leaders, 114 youth leaders, and 78 RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) leaders. Our graduates include Mayor Carvalho and Council Member Mel Rapozo, along with numerous Executive Directors, business leaders, and principals and vice-principals of elementary, middle, and high schools from around Kaua'i.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to implement an evidence-based leadership model created by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner titled "The Leadership Challenge" that encompasses 5 Leadership Practices. This time-proven model has been refined to include a particular emphasis on the local values associated with Hawaiian culture. The five practices are:
- Model the Way
- Inspire a Shared Vision
- Challenge the Process
- Enable Others to Act
- Encourage the Heart
